What's In A Course? Pilates Instructor Training Could Be For You!
The first thing to stress when looking at getting your own training sorted is that not all colleges and training companies provide like for like courses. Consider your search for the right courses as an assignment in itself. Don't just be satisfied with the first company you come across - you'll save time in the long-run if you research lots of sites, and have a much better perspective on the direction to take. Each time you refresh this page you'll see different companies offering training and advice - take a look at them and make notes on each to make comparisons for yourself.
Where To Specialise?
Maybe you've decided that a career in fitness training would suit you, but you're not sure where to specialise. Here are a few things to think about...
Working as a trainer or instructor means different things to different people, because there are so many aspects to learn about. Working on a client's cardiovascular techniques is not what fitness training is all about - to be sure you'll need that in your repertoire (especially if you're working in a gym). However, a pro should expect to have knowledge of many other things as well.
There's a good deal of science involved in being a fitness pro. There's psychology, kinesiology, anatomy, physiology and biomechanics to learn. Next comes sports injuries, massage and first aid. Along with optimal cardio workouts, weights and equipment.
You should also be computer literate, and know how to keep and assess client records. And if you've always fancied working for yourself, you'll need to gen up on planning, insurance, marketing, accounting and tax issues as well. Blimey!
Worry Not!
Don't panic though, nobody knows it all to start with, and lots of people learn one thing in depth and become an authority on that subject alone.
You could choose weight issues and diet. Learn about the role nutrition plays in our diet, and which foods contain the most nutrients that contribute to good health. Find out about the workings of the digestive system. The different stages of life can have a profound impact on weight - learn about how to manage weight and how all food has an energy value. Other aspects of nutrition and weight management are balanced diets, healthy eating, sports nutrition and burning up calories.
Take personal training, which is something many people are looking for today. To confidently assess and train a client, you need to understand the composition and make-up of the body. Therefore you should look for training that includes physiology.
You might already attend your local gym several times a week, and have a hankering to become a professional gym instructor. You'll need a course that teaches all the professional obligations, as well as practice and theory. You must be able to work with a new person and create an exercise routine that is safe and functional for their needs. Good client assessment training is therefore essential. In addition you'll learn the ins and outs of exercise equipment, the science behind different types of exercises, and training skills and techniques.
For Those Who Want A Bit More...
The treatment and prevention of injuries can be a valuable add-on to your health and fitness career. If this interests you, you might also consider rehabilitation therapy for clients who've suffered injuries, along with sports massage.
You could train to carry out health and fitness assessments, and perhaps bolt this onto your specialist area. So you would get trained on measuring and monitoring people's fitness levels via a number of different tests. You might incorporate checks for flexibility, posture, muscle strength, endurance and blood pressure for example.
What Could Be Better?
Whichever area of the health and fitness industry you choose to get into, (and there are many more than we've discussed here,) you will find it's an incredibly enriching and rewarding place to be. What could be better than going to work every day with new challenges to give people a better quality of life than they previously had?
Equally, by inspiring other people to get slimmer, more toned, fitter and stronger, you will also benefit from your own teaching at every session you do. Explore the perfect job for you, and then find the best training courses to prepare you for it.
